Good Spirit was born in 2017 from a conversation I had with an older male volunteer at the group home where I previously worked. Here is an account of that interaction:
"Good Spirit originated from a conversation I had with an older gentleman who was volunteering at the group home where I was working. He began doing landscaping, and I immediately noticed that he was going above and beyond what I had asked of him. I took a bottle of water outside to him, and it was then that he shared with me that it was because of Jesus Christ that he performed his work the way he did. He said, 'Whatever work you do should be done for God, and you should always do your best at it.' He then asked me how I became involved at the group home and told me I had a good spirit. Many other individuals have also mentioned that I have a good spirit, but I never truly understood what it meant and how much it meant to me. That humbled me and changed me forever. Less than 15 minutes after that conversation, God began to plant the seed of Good Spirit in my heart."
Good Spirit exists to bridge the gap between your personal and professional self. Over the years, we have heard many individuals say that who they are at work is completely different from who they are at home or around family and friends. I believe you shouldn't have to portray a false persona in the workplace. The true and authentic version of yourself should be able to show up and thrive in every aspect of life. I also believe that the workplace should be safe place that is conducive for you to thrive.
For volunteers, that means continuing to show up to do the most social good and being willing and flexible to help out.
For interns, that means showing up to give your best, as you learn all that you can about yourself AND the work field you are in.
For employees, that means continuing to develop personally and truly assessing your AFI.
For organizations, that means creating culture for your people to truly thrive and perform at their greatest capacity. It means continuing to provide learning, training, and development opportunities for your people.
Ultimately, I want to help bring out the Good Spirit in everyone. I want you to embody the volunteer who showed up authentically and performed to the best of his ability while being of service to others. I want you to know and understand that personal and professional development go hand in hand. Using both you can become a well rounded individual, or what I call, a Good Spirit.
